As we come back from Lockdown, you may well look at how you eat, want to lose any lockdown ‘excess’ that may have accidentally appeared on ‘Tina Tummy’ and increase your physical activity.
What diet do you choose? What is the healthiest? Is there a perfect diet you should adhere to?
Obviously, how you go about your diet depends on your personal goals. If you are looking to lose weight you need to eat less energy than you burn, establish a calorie deficit. But it stands to reason you ideally do this following the healthiest diet there is right?
Hmmm! Of course you will…! (looking up and to the left with pursed lips!)
So, what is the best diet to follow? Is there such a thing? We hear about how healthy the French and Italian diets are, so is there any truth in this?
What do we mean by a ‘healthy’ diet? Well this would be a diet that keeps your body working as optimally as possible day to day and also helps your system fight, repel and prevent disease.
In this study covering 209,000 individuals over 30yrs, it covered 4 main healthy eating habits, Mediterranean, Plant based, Healthy Eating Index and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index, it showed that those who stuck more closely to any of the regimes reduced their risk for Cardiovascular disease. This also allowed for different food habits, preferences and attitudes to food that align with our own ethics and ideologies without any detriment to our health.

One of the big issues with the diet and health industry is all the nonsense and waffle that is promoted to us as the best way to eat for health and wellness.
We have faddy shake diets, promoting ‘fat’ loss in super fast time and others rammed full of ‘super greens’, to boost our immune system or purge us from the horrid effects of mythical toxins, usually touted by the brands customers, B-list celebs or MLM distributors. We have the clubs, shouting about syns and points. We have low carb, high fat, and all the geographical locations of the world, who have exported to us the best, dried-organic-peace-antioxidant-super berry to save our fermenting guts!
It’s a minefield that confuses the hell out of me!
Thankfully, I’m a cynical mofo and you know what?
It’s all bollocks!
The truth is the healthiest diet is a nourishing one you can stick to long term. One that also allows for you own preferences, traditions and cultural norms to be included as part of your diet as this will help maintain your health, keep the culture and traditions alive and have no ill affect.
So what is the best diet?
It’s yours, right now, as long as its nutritious, energy balanced, enjoyable and fits your lifestyle. And this is why our Weight Management program looks at the foods you like, the habits you currently have and tweak those working with you, rather than ‘tell’ you what to eat.
It means you’re more likely to adhere to the regime and furthermore, enjoy the process.
So enjoy your food, eat well, shun and disapprove of all the faddy shite and most of all….. Stay Classy San Diego!
Dan
